The unit in question was installed in 2009 as part of a wind/hydrogen demonstration project. The unit has not been in use since the project ended several years ago. As such, the owner has decided to decommission the equipment and has tasked Change Energy Services with searching for expressions of interest with regards to the purchase of this unit – a Hydrogenics HySTAT 30. It will be available for inspection in St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador come summer of 2020.
The HySTAT 30 uses the electrolysis principle in order to generate hydrogen. Hydrogen and oxygen bubbles form inside the cell stack’s individual cells, are carried along with the electrolyte to the tops of the cells and are collected in separate sections of the cell stack. The gases flow through the cell stack outlets to the gas-liquid separators where the gas is separated from the liquid electrolyte. The hydrogen is then rinsed with clean incoming demineralized water, in order to reduce the amount of residual electrolyte in the gas stream. The hydrogen then flows through the coalescent filter, where it can be cooled and where any water droplets are removed. From here, the gas flows to either the atmosphere or the user line.
The HySTAT 30 is comprised of two sub systems: the process system, which produces the hydrogen, and the electrolyzer power supply, which includes the power supply and the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) system. The following is a list of the major components of these systems:
- Electrolyte
- Cell stack
- Gas-liquid separators
- Fill-up volume
- Rinser
- Gas coolers
- Coalescing filters
- Break tank
- Vent link water locks
- Electrolyzer power supply
- Control panel
